Canton Fire Department
Welcome to the Canton Fire Department.
The Canton Fire Department was started in 1898 by a group of concerned citizens who saw the need to organize a fire department to save property. Over the past 109 years the act of firefighting has change immensely, as our role of firefighters has changed also. Through the years of progress, one common denominator remains, and that is the firefighter. We confront the same issues as the group in 1898 - protecting the community we live in. Today's firefighters possess the same qualities, knowledge, dedication and courage to get the job done.
The Canton Volunteer Fire Department is made up of 25 dedicated volunteers. We respond to approximately 85 calls each year. Our current budget is approximately $34,000.00. Emergency Medical Service is provided by Med-Care Ambulance in the town of Mexico.

Due to the fact that we are a volunteer fire department and have full time jobs, there may be times when you may not be able to obtain a burn permit.
Under a permitted burn you are responsible for any damage or cost your fire may cause.
Any person burning logs, stumps, roots, brush, field of dry grass, leaves and/or debris is required by Maine State law to obtain a burn permit.
You must burn after 5:00 pm unless it's raining or the ground is snow covered.
Permits are only issued on Class 1 & 2 days. Maine Forest Service measures and determines this daily.
Have adquate help and equipment to control your fire.
It is illegal to leave a fire unattended at any time.
